What is USDT? Buying, cash-out, wallets and networks
What is Tether's USDT?
USDT is a stablecoin issued by Tether that targets a peg to the US dollar. It is commonly used to trade and transfer cryptoassets. It is an on-chain token, not US dollars in a bank account. The dollar peg is a design objective; its market price can still deviate from one dollar.
According to Tether's official explanation, reserves may include cash, cash equivalents and other assets. This does not mean that one US dollar in bank cash backs every USDT. Holders must still consider issuer, reserve, liquidity, platform and wallet custody risks.
How does buying USDT differ from cashing out?
Buying: paying money or other assets to receive USDT
Buying USDT increases the USDT you hold, for example by exchanging fiat currency or other cryptoassets for it. Account eligibility, available assets and payment methods vary by trading channel. Support for cryptocurrency alone does not establish that USDT can be bought.
Cashing out: delivering USDT to receive HKD
On this website, USDT cash-out means a customer sells USDT they already hold in exchange for HKD.VBIT's physical stores in Hong Kong accept customers selling USDT only. We do not sell USDT to customers; HKD is settled in cash at the store only. For this trade direction, read about our USDT cash-out and exchange for HKD.
Common uses and limitations of USDT
Some trading platforms use USDT as the quote asset in trading pairs, allowing users to exchange between cryptoassets. USDT can also be transferred on-chain, but transferability does not mean every receiving channel accepts the same network or that tokens can be converted to cash immediately.
Exchanging a volatile asset for a stablecoin changes the risks you bear; it does not guarantee your capital or eliminate risk. US dollar and Hong Kong dollar denominations, a particular exchange quote and the HKD you receive are also different things.
Wallets, ERC-20 and TRC-20: what to know before transferring
A wallet address and a private key serve different purposes
A receiving address accepts assets; a private key or recovery phrase controls the wallet. Never give private keys, recovery phrases or verification codes to anyone claiming to be customer service. Self-custody requires you to manage backups and operations; a private wallet alone does not guarantee safer assets.
ERC-20 and TRC-20 are token standards on different blockchains
For USDT, ERC-20 usually refers to USDT on Ethereum, while TRC-20 refers to USDT on TRON. Tether's protocol information lists several issuance networks. These are technical token details, not a list of networks accepted by VBIT stores.
The sending and receiving sides must use matching assets and networks, and check the full receiving address and amount. Tokens sharing the name USDT cannot be assumed to transfer directly between networks. Choosing the wrong network or address may cause asset loss.
Distinguish fees, sending and confirmation
On-chain fees depend on the network and transaction conditions; platforms may also have withdrawal rules. Submitted or sent does not mean confirmed on-chain, let alone completion of HKD settlement at a store. Do not assume any network has zero fees or always completes in a fixed number of seconds.
What should you check when invited to trade USDT?
Be alert to offers to buy tokens above market price, guaranteed profits, fake payment screenshots and requests to transfer assets to a verification wallet first. Do not identify a counterparty solely by social media names, groups or screenshots.
