Background to the November 2024 market discussion
After the US election in November 2024, policy expectations became a major crypto market topic. Reports focused on rising Bitcoin prices, total crypto capitalisation and institutional views of future regulation. These describe the historical setting and cannot be applied directly to current markets.
What does rising total market capitalisation mean?
Market capitalisation is generally estimated by multiplying price by circulating supply. The combined value of multiple assets changes with prices and supply. It is not cash that all holders could receive at the displayed prices. Total crypto capitalisation and a single listed company's equity value are not the same measure.
Policy expectations and actual trades
Comments on policy direction are opinions. Implementation, scope and timing depend on formal documents. Rising total capitalisation or greater institutional involvement does not mean an individual asset's price can only rise.
Physical BTC purchases and sales have different asset directions. See the guide to buying BTC and BTC to HKD Service. Before trading, also read about official channels and transfer safety checks.
