The 2026 Web3 discussions in Hong Kong brought stablecoins, tokenisation and payment infrastructure into focus. These subjects affect how users assess crypto services, but an industry development is not automatically a new service offered by every OTC store.
1. Stablecoin licensing is an issuer regime
On 10 April 2026, the HKMA announced issuer licences for Anchorpoint Financial Limited and HSBC. Its official explanation sets out the distinction between a regulated issuer and the wider ecosystem. Do not treat an issuer announcement as an OTC store's own licence.
2. Digital settlement and cash exchange have different roles
Stablecoins and tokenised assets are being explored for payment and settlement uses. A physical OTC transaction instead concerns the agreed asset quantity and cash handover at a store. Proposed infrastructure does not establish that an individual provider offers international transfers or every settlement currency.
3. Users need a clear service direction
The question is not simply whether a store mentions USDT. Users need to know whether they are buying it or selling it. At VBIT, USDT is available for cash out only, with HKD cash settlement at the store; it is not sold to customers.
4. Transfer checks remain essential
Asset names, networks, receiving addresses and quantities still need to be verified for the actual transaction. New technology does not remove impersonation or transfer risks. Keep the receipt and transaction reference, and use the official store contact details when arranging a visit.
