Cold Wallets in Hong Kong: Self-Custody and OTC Transfers

Self-custody means taking responsibility for the keys used to control your cryptocurrency. A hardware wallet is a tool for managing and signing with those keys; the assets and transaction history remain on the blockchain. Owning a device alone does not remove the need for backups and careful transfer checks.

Separate storage from a transaction

A wallet stores or manages signing information. An OTC transaction exchanges an agreed asset amount for cash, or cash for an asset transfer. These are separate tasks: choosing a wallet does not establish the identity of a trading counterparty or guarantee a trade.

Keep recovery information under your control

Follow the wallet maker's own setup and backup instructions. Keep recovery information away from people or websites asking you to reveal it. Read the Bitcoin wallet security guide for background on backups, offline storage and wallet security.

Receiving Bitcoin after a cash purchase

Prepare a Bitcoin receiving address from your own wallet. At the store, verify the asset, network and address before the transfer, and compare the receipt with your wallet record. You should not need to hand over your recovery phrase to provide a receiving address.

Sending assets for cash out

When selling assets, verify the store's receiving details for that transaction and authorise the transfer yourself. Retain the transaction reference and reconcile it with the receipt and HKD cash received. VBIT handles in-store HKD cash transactions; USDT is available for cash out only.

Keep the product choice separate

Device features, supported assets and backup methods depend on the actual model and its manufacturer documentation. An intact-looking box or a physical shop is not, by itself, proof that a device or its setup is safe. This guide does not require buying a particular wallet model to use the physical OTC services.
